Why Jiu-Jitsu Is a Great First Martial Art for Preschoolers
Tiny Champs is play-based Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There is no punching or kicking. Children learn through movement games that build balance and coordination, and they practice listening, focus, and taking turns with a partner their own size.
The class stays on the ground. Kids learn to fall safely and to tap when they want a drill to stop. Certified instructors lead every class, and nobody steps on the mat without a membership.
Looking at karate or taekwondo for a 3-year-old? Jiu-jitsu teaches control without striking.

What a Tiny Champs Class Looks Like
Tiny Champs is built for a preschooler’s first time on the mat. Each class follows the same order, so 3, 4 and 5 year olds know what comes next.
Warm-up games
Animal walks, tumbling, and coordination games that get everybody moving.
A simple technique
One age-appropriate movement, shown by the instructor and practiced together.
Partner drills
Controlled practice with a partner, taking turns and tapping to stop.
Circle-up
A short recap, a character lesson, and high-fives before pickup.
Stripes and Belts for Ages 3–5
Gracie Barra Davenport follows the IBJJF ranking system. With consistent attendance, kids earn a stripe about every month. That gives a 3, 4 or 5 year old a regular, visible goal before the next belt.
Every child starts at white belt. The kids BJJ belt order explains each rank from white through green.
Is My Child Ready?
Tiny Champs is for ages 3, 4 and 5, and kids must be potty-trained. The class is a child’s first martial art: balance, coordination, listening, and taking turns, not a technical test.
Parents can watch every class. A parent does not have to stay on site. Only enrolled members step on the mat.
Ages 3–5
Tiny Champs is the preschool group. At 6, kids move to Little Champs.
Potty-trained
Children in Tiny Champs need to be potty-trained before they start.
Parents
You can watch. You do not have to stay at the academy during class.
What About Muay Thai or MMA for Preschoolers?
Our Kids Muay Thai and Kids MMA programs start at age 6. Ages 3–5 start with Tiny Champs jiu-jitsu, then can add Muay Thai or MMA at 6.
6 and up? See Kids Jiu-Jitsu (Little Champs 6–9 and Juniors 10–13) and Kids Muay Thai (ages 6–13).
How to Get Started
The free academy tour is a visit to watch and talk with staff. Your child does not train during the tour. Nobody goes on the mat without a membership.
