When are the no-gi classes?

Teens & Adults No-Gi is Friday at 12:00 PM, and Teens & Adults Competition (No-Gi) is Friday at 6:30 PM, ages 14+. Kids train No-Gi Anti-Bullying on Fridays: Little Champs (6-9) at 4:50 PM and Juniors (10-13) at 5:40 PM.

Do I need a gi for no-gi class?

No. No-gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts or spats. Ask on your academy tour what to wear.

Should beginners start with gi or no-gi?

At Gracie Barra we recommend starting with the gi. The slower pace builds a technical base that transfers to no-gi. Many students train gi during the week and no-gi on Friday.

Is no-gi the same as MMA?

No. No-gi is grappling only, with no striking. It is a common base for MMA, which adds striking. See our adult MMA program if you want both.

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu in Davenport, FL

Teens, adults and kids · Fridays

No-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is grappling without the traditional kimono. You train in a rash guard and shorts, so there are no collar or sleeve grips, and the pace tends to be faster, with more underhooks, body locks and wrestling-style control. At Gracie Barra Davenport, no-gi is part of the regular weekly schedule, with dedicated no-gi classes every Friday.

No-Gi Class Times

Class	Ages	When
Teens & Adults No-Gi	14+	Friday 12:00 PM
Teens & Adults Competition (No-Gi)	14+	Friday 6:30 PM
Little Champs No-Gi Anti-Bullying	6–9	Friday 4:50 PM
Juniors No-Gi Anti-Bullying	10–13	Friday 5:40 PM

Times match the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schedule. All other Teens & Adults BJJ classes are in the gi.

Gi vs No-Gi: What Changes

Grips: wrists, neck, underhooks and overhooks instead of collars and sleeves.
Pace: usually faster, with more scrambles.
Positions: more emphasis on body locks, front headlocks and leg control.
Fundamentals stay the same: position before submission, escapes, and tapping to stop.

Who No-Gi Is For

No-gi is open to teens and adults who train in our Teens & Adults BJJ program. Most students build their base in the gi during the week and add no-gi on Friday. If you are interested in MMA, no-gi grappling is a natural fit alongside our adult MMA program. For kids, Friday No-Gi Anti-Bullying is part of the kids BJJ program.
