Kids BJJ vs Karate
vs Taekwondo
All three can be great for kids. Here's an honest look at how they differ, so you can pick the right fit for your child.
Should my child do BJJ, karate or taekwondo?
All three teach discipline, respect and confidence, so the best choice depends on your child. Karate and taekwondo are striking arts built around punches, kicks and forms, and taekwondo is known for its kicking. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art with no strikes: kids learn to hold, escape and control a partner through hands-on practice. The easiest way to decide is to watch a class of each; at Gracie Barra Davenport, that starts with a free academy tour.
How the Three Compare
| Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu | Karate | Taekwondo | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Origin | Brazil, developed from Japanese jiu-jitsu and judo | Okinawa, Japan | Korea |
| Main focus | Grappling: holds, escapes, pins and control | Striking: punches, kicks, blocks | Striking, especially high and spinning kicks |
| Strikes? | No punching or kicking | Yes | Yes |
| How kids practice | Drills and supervised live practice with a partner ("rolling") | Basics, forms (kata) and sparring | Basics, forms (poomsae) and sparring |
| Competition | Grappling tournaments | Kata and kumite events | Forms and sparring events; Olympic sport |
| Often a good fit for | Kids who like hands-on, puzzle-like play and close teamwork | Kids who enjoy forms, structure and striking | Kids with lots of energy who love kicking and athletics |
Every school teaches differently. These are general descriptions of each art, not of any specific academy.
The School Matters
as Much as the Style
Whichever art you choose, a good kids program has a clear curriculum, classes grouped by age, coaches who know every child by name and a clean, safe training space. Watch a class before you sign up and see how your child reacts.
It's also fine to try more than one. Plenty of kids cross-train, and what they enjoy at 5 may change by 10.
