Women’s Only vs Co-Ed Jiu-Jitsu: Which Class Should You Start With?

By Gracie Barra Davenport

If you have been curious about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but felt unsure about walking onto a mat full of strangers, you are not alone. Many women ask the same first question: should I start in a women’s only class, or jump straight into a co-ed one? There is no single right answer. Both are good ways to learn, and many women end up training in both. This guide lays out the real differences so you can pick the start that fits you.

What a Women’s Only Class Is (and Isn’t)

A women’s only class is a regular jiu-jitsu class where every student on the mat is a woman. The curriculum is still jiu-jitsu: the same positions, escapes, and fundamentals taught in any Gracie Barra class. It is not a watered-down version and it is not a one-time seminar. What changes is the room: training partners are closer in size to each other, and many women find it easier to ask questions and try new movements when they feel at ease.

Why Many Women Prefer to Start Women-Only

  • Comfort with close contact. Jiu-jitsu is a grappling art, so you will be close to your partner. Getting used to that with other women can make the first weeks feel more natural.
  • More similar partners. Drilling with someone of similar size helps you feel how leverage and timing work before you face bigger partners.
  • A built-in community. You get to know the same group twice a week, which makes it easier to keep showing up.
  • Room to ask questions. Beginners learn fastest when they feel free to say “can you show me that again?”

What Co-Ed Classes Add

Co-ed classes give you a wider range of partners: different sizes, strength levels, and styles. For self-defense, that variety matters, because the people most likely to threaten a woman are often larger than her. Training safely with bigger partners, under a coach’s supervision, shows you what technique feels like against more weight. That is why we see the two kinds of classes as complementary, not competing.

A Simple Way to Decide

  • If you are nervous about close contact or brand new to martial arts, start with the women’s only class.
  • If you already train or want the most class times each week, combine the women’s class with our adult classes.
  • If you are a teen girl age 14 or older, the women’s class is a welcoming place to begin with a parent’s OK.
