Starting Jiu-Jitsu as a Woman: Your First Month, Step by Step
By Gracie Barra Davenport
Starting jiu-jitsu as an adult woman can feel like a big step, especially if you have never done a martial art. The good news is that every student on the mat started exactly where you are. This guide walks you through what your first month usually looks like, so there are fewer surprises.
Before Your First Class
Most women start by visiting. A free academy tour is watch-only: you see the room, watch a class, and ask questions. When you are ready to train, bring water, tie your hair back, trim your nails and wear fitted athletic clothes. Our guide on what to wear to jiu-jitsu as a woman covers the details.
Week 1: Learning How to Move
Your first classes focus on basics: how to fall safely, how to move your hips on the ground, and the main positions. Expect to feel a little lost at times. That is normal. Coaches break each movement into small steps.
Week 2: Your First Escapes
You will begin working on escapes from common pins and grabs. This is where many women first feel how leverage works: a well-timed movement of the hips can do what pushing with the arms cannot.
Week 3: Tapping and Trust
You will learn to tap, the signal to stop, and why it is a sign of good judgment, not failure. As you get comfortable, coaches introduce controlled, gradual resistance with a partner. You set the pace.
Week 4: Putting It Together
By the end of the month, moves start linking together: an escape leads to a guard, a guard leads to standing up. You will still have lots to learn, and that is the fun part. Progress in jiu-jitsu is measured in months and years, and everyone moves at a different speed.
Common Worries, Honestly Answered
- “I’m not in shape.” You do not need to get fit before starting. Go at your own pace and let fitness come with training.
- “I’m nervous about close contact.” That is very common, and it is one reason many women start in a women’s only class.
- “I’m too old.” Adults start jiu-jitsu at all ages. If you have health concerns, check with your doctor first.
- “I’ll be the only beginner.” Beginners join regularly, and coaches pair you with partners who help you learn.
