Muay Thai vs BJJ: Which Should You Learn First?

By Gracie Barra Davenport

If you are choosing your first martial art, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) are two of the most common options, and they are very different. Muay Thai is a striking art. BJJ is a grappling art. Neither is "better" in general. The right first choice depends on what you want from training. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

The Short Answer

Start with BJJ if you want to learn control, escapes and how to get back to your feet, or if you prefer technical, problem-solving training. Start with Muay Thai if you want striking, footwork and a high-energy stand-up workout. If you can, try to watch both on a free academy tour before you decide.

What Is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is Thailand's national combat sport, often called the Art of Eight Limbs because it uses punches, kicks, elbows and knees, plus the clinch. A beginner class usually covers stance, footwork, basic combinations on pads and bags, and defense. You can read more in What Is Muay Thai?

What Is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art built on leverage and position. Instead of striking, you learn to control a partner, escape bad positions and apply joint locks and chokes, with a tap to stop at any time. Gracie Barra was founded by Master Carlos Gracie Jr., son of Carlos Gracie, the creator of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. More here: What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

  • You are interested in kickboxing or MMA later.
  • You like working on pads and bags with a partner.

Why Many People End Up Training Both

Striking and grappling cover different situations, which is why mixed martial arts combines them. A common path is to build a base in one art for a few months, then add one class a week of the other. If you think you will want both eventually, our adult MMA program is another way to see how they fit together. For a related comparison, see MMA vs BJJ: Which to Learn First.
