Muay Thai for Teens: What Parents Should Know

By Gracie Barra Davenport

At 14, teens at Gracie Barra Davenport can move from kids classes into our teen and adult Muay Thai classes. For many teenagers it is the first time they train next to adults, which is a big step. Here is what that looks like and what parents usually ask.

Why teens like Muay Thai

  • It is a real skill. Teens learn punches, kicks, knees, elbows and the clinch, and can feel themselves improving week to week.
  • It is a hard workout. Pad rounds, footwork and conditioning drills build fitness without feeling like a gym routine.
  • It builds respect. Muay Thai has traditions, from the wai kru to bowing in, that teach respect for coaches and partners.

How teens train with adults

Teens 14+ join the regular Muay Thai classes. Coaches pair them with partners who match their size and experience, and new students spend their first weeks on technique and pad work. Controlled sparring is introduced later, only when the coach thinks a student is ready, and always with protective gear.

Prajeds: how rank works

Muay Thai does not use belts. Students wear prajeds, armbands that show rank, and test for the next level at our Muay Thai test days. Our article on Muay Thai ranks explains the idea.

Gear for teens

Beginners need a mouthguard, comfortable shorts and a T-shirt. Gloves, hand wraps and shin guards come next. Ask the front desk what to bring before buying anything.

Safety

Like any contact sport, Muay Thai carries some risk of bumps and strains. Coaches teach control first and supervise every round. It is a good idea to check with your family doctor before your teen starts any new sport.

Class times

Muay Thai for ages 14+ runs on weekday evenings and late mornings, including 6:30 PM classes and 7:30 PM on Tuesday and Thursday. Check the class schedule for every time, and see the adult Muay Thai program page. Teens who also want ground skills can add jiu-jitsu or MMA.
