BJJ Open Mat Explained: What It Is, Who Goes & Why It Matters

By Gracie Barra Davenport · September 2026

"Open mat" is one of those phrases every BJJ school throws around without explaining. If you are new, it sounds intimidating — like you are supposed to show up and just start rolling with no instruction. The truth is more useful: open mat is the most efficient training session of the week, and once you understand the format, it stops being scary. Here is exactly what happens at a Gracie Barra Davenport open mat.

What Open Mat Actually Is

Open mat is a scheduled training session with no coached instruction. Students show up, warm up on their own, find partners, and roll. The room is supervised — a coach is present, the timer is running rounds (usually 5–7 minutes), and the culture is safe and respectful — but there is no syllabus. You choose who you train with and what you work on. It is part lab, part social club, part fight room.

Who Open Mat Is For

Honestly? Everyone — including white belts. The common myth is that open mat is for advanced students only. At our academy, it is one of the best places for a new student to get reps without the pressure of a structured class.

  • White belts: drill what you learned during the week and get extra rounds in.
  • Blue belts and up: build your A-game, test new positions, sharpen weaknesses.
  • Competitors: get high-volume rounds at competition intensity.
  • Older grapplers: pick lighter rounds and focus on technique over scrambles.
  • Visiting black belts: if you train at another school and you are in Polk County, come roll.

Open Mat Etiquette in 90 Seconds

Tap early, tap often — there are no medals at open mat. Ask for rounds politely ("got a round?"), shake hands before and after. Match intensity to the partner in front of you; if you are a 200-lb purple belt rolling with a 130-lb white belt, you are coaching, not crushing. No hygiene issues — clean gi, trimmed nails, deodorant. If you are sick, stay home. New students who follow these basics get welcomed everywhere they go in the BJJ world.
