What Is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu? History, Philosophy & How It Differs
By Gracie Barra Davenport · July 2026
If you've searched for "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" or "Gracie BJJ," you've probably encountered a confusing landscape of organizations, brands, and claims. Let's clear it up: Gracie Jiu-Jitsu IS Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The Gracie family created it. Everything else is a branch of the same tree.
The Origin: From Japan to Brazil
In the early 1900s, a Japanese Judo master named Mitsuyo Maeda emigrated to Brazil and began teaching his art to the Gracie family — specifically Carlos Gracie and his brothers. The Gracies, particularly Helio Gracie (who was smaller and less athletic than his brothers), adapted the techniques to emphasize leverage, timing, and ground control over strength and athleticism.
What emerged was a new system — one that allowed a smaller person to defeat a larger, stronger opponent through superior technique. The Gracies called it "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" and proved it worked through decades of open challenges, vale tudo fights, and eventually the creation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 1993.
Gracie Barra: Carlos Gracie Jr.'s Vision
Gracie Barra was founded by Master Carlos Gracie Jr. — son of Carlos Gracie, one of the original founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His vision was to create a worldwide network of schools that would make Jiu-Jitsu accessible to everyone, not just fighters and athletes. That vision has grown into the world's largest BJJ organization: 900+ schools across 6 continents.
Gracie Barra's mission statement — "Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone" — reflects this philosophy. Every GB school, including Gracie Barra Davenport, follows a certified curriculum designed so that a complete beginner can walk in and start learning on day one, regardless of age, size, or fitness level.
How Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Differs from "Sport BJJ"
Modern BJJ has split into two broad camps: self-defense focused (traditional Gracie Jiu-Jitsu) and sport/competition focused (sport BJJ). The techniques overlap significantly, but the priorities differ.
Self-defense BJJ prioritizes positions and techniques that work in a real confrontation: distance management, takedown defense, mount escapes, and standing up safely. Sport BJJ prioritizes scoring points in tournament rulesets — sometimes using positions (like pulling guard or playing inverted) that would be dangerous in a real fight.
At Gracie Barra, we teach both. The Fundamentals curriculum is heavily self-defense oriented, ensuring every student can protect themselves. Advanced classes incorporate sport-specific techniques for students who want to compete. This dual approach produces well-rounded practitioners who can handle any situation.
The GB Curriculum System
What sets Gracie Barra apart from independent BJJ schools is the certified curriculum. Every GB school worldwide teaches the same core techniques in the same structured progression. This means: your instructor has been trained to teach (not just trained to fight), the techniques are organized logically from white belt through black belt, and if you travel anywhere in the world, you can walk into a GB school and pick up right where you left off.
